Hacienda La Esmeralda –
Hacienda La Esmeralda is one of Panama’s most renowned coffee producers and is widely associated with the rise of Panama’s Geisha coffee on the international specialty coffee scene. Located in the highlands of Boquete, the farm has played a defining role in establishing Panama as a source of some of the world’s most sought-after coffees.
The Peterson family, who have operated Hacienda La Esmeralda for generations, began cultivating coffee at the estate in the early 20th century. The farm gained international attention in the early 2000s when its Geisha coffees achieved exceptional scores and record-breaking prices at the Best of Panama competition and auction.
Today, Hacienda La Esmeralda continues to focus on producing small lots of highly expressive coffees, with particular attention to variety, altitude, selective harvesting, and processing. Its coffees are known for their pronounced floral aromas, citrus and tropical fruit character, vibrant acidity, and remarkable clarity.

Hacienda La Esmeralda operates across several properties in the Boquete highlands, including the renowned Jaramillo, Cañas Verdes, and El Velo areas. These locations offer different elevations, microclimates and soil conditions, contributing to distinct expressions of the coffee.
The farm is particularly famous for its Geisha coffees. Originally collected in Ethiopia, the variety was introduced to Panama in the 1960s and later planted at Hacienda La Esmeralda. It was initially considered an ordinary production variety, but its exceptional cup characteristics became evident when the Peterson family began producing it at higher elevations.
Hacienda La Esmeralda's Geisha coffees became internationally recognized after winning the Best of Panama competition in 2004 with an exceptionally high score. The success helped trigger a broader interest in Geisha and contributed to Panama becoming one of the world's most prestigious origins for specialty coffee.
Today, the farm produces coffees in carefully separated lots, with harvesting and processing designed to preserve the characteristics of individual varieties and growing areas. The best lots typically display intense floral aromatics, bergamot and citrus notes, tropical fruit, tea-like qualities, and a bright, complex acidity.
